Why It's Critical To Know What The Body Is Saying ...

We live in a verbal world – or so we think.

Only words matter – what do you think?

How true is that – let us find out.

Let me share with you a study conducted in 1967 by Professor Albert Mehrabian from the University of Pennsylvania. He discovered the following:

7% of communication is VERBAL – WHAT WE SAY.
38% is VOCAL - HOW WE SAY IT, and
55% is VISUAL which means BODY LANGUAGE.

That means that in general, 93% of communication is NON-VERBAL.

That explains how a lot of confusion happens in communication when the body language does not match the words. That also explains how a lot of people fail their job interviews before they even open their mouth.

That explains how people accidentally and unconsciously sabotage their personal and business relationships when their body language does not appear congruent, confident and sincere, even if they feel it in their heart.

So what you want to learn is how to make the right first impression by sending out positive and accurate body language signals. After all. You don’t get a second chance to make a great first impression, do you?

1. PEOPLE DON’T KNOW THE CONTEXT

You may be rubbing your eyes in a staff meeting because you stayed back late last night to help your boss finish a work project. But others who don’t know the actual context may think you are bored with the meeting content.

2. PEOPLE GENERALIZE FROM ONE GESTURE

You may tend to take off your spectacles and hold it with one hand during a negotiation when you want to think more carefully but others may think you are becoming more negative or critical when you do that

3. PEOPLE DON’T KNOW YOUR COMMUNICATION STYLE

You may be playing with a pen as you listen to your boss talking in a staff meeting. But your behavior may be seen as not paying attention although that is how you actually keep your focus to listen as you are a kinesthetic person.

4. PEOPLE WON’T KNOW YOUR BASELINE

You may feel more comfortable folding your arms across your chest when you listen to people. But people who don’t know your baseline, which is your normal behavior, may think you are unfriendly or unapproachable.

5. PEOPLE HAVE THEIR OWN LIKES & DISLIKES

You may dislike the face of your uncle or the voice of your aunt but have you considered you may also probably dislike anyone who looks or sounds the same?
You may also like or dislike someone unconsciously because of this factor. Have you considered that people may often dislike you because you look or sound like someone they don’t like?

6. PEOPLE COME FROM DIFFERENT CULTURES

You may like doing the OK gesture with your fingers but do you know that in some cultures like South America, that gesture is considered offensive? The problem is that what may be polite in one culture is offensive once you cross the border!
